Our first International project of the year will take place in Honduras. Honduras, in the north-central part of Central America, has a Caribbean as well as a Pacific coastline. Guatemala is to the west, El Salvador to the south, and Nicaragua to the east. The second-largest country in Central America, Honduras is slightly larger than Tennessee. Generally mountainous, the country is marked by fertile plateaus, river valleys, and narrow coastal plains. Honduras is the second poorest country in Central America with over half of the population living on less than $1 per day.

What do you spend $1 on?

As with much of the world, other than America and the few other economically developed countries, clean drinking water is serious problem. Families are forced to rely on contaminated water supplies, and the prevalence of waterborne diseases like cholera is increasing. Mosquitoes that carry malaria and dengue fever are also a problem. In addition to the health issues it creates, poor access to clean water also causes overall development to stagnate. Many women and children in the rural areas of Honduras spend up to six hours each day simply fetching water and carrying it home on their heads.

Which would you choose to drink?
